Events in which one partner responds, or fails to respond, at a time of urgent need are found to unduly influence the quality of an attachment relationship and to redefine the security of the relationship. Known in EFT as attachment injuries, these injuries can range from seemingly minor incidents, such as a hurtful comment at a key moment of need, or the prototypical injury of infidelity. They have the power to shatter the attachment bond and redefine the relationship as unsafe and untrustworthy. From that moment on, the shattering event continues to be the standard by which one partner measures the dependability of the offending partner (OP). In Stage 1, following an affair or other breach of trust, partners need help to talk openly about the cycle that takes over and prevents them from discussing the rupturing event.
